Digital Decluttering Made Easy
In today's digital age, our digital world can become cluttered, much like our physical space. Let’s face it—our lives are filled to the brim with files—photos, documents, spreadsheets, you name it. While the convenience of digital storage is undeniable, it's easy for our digital spaces to become cluttered and disorganized faster than you can say "delete." But with a little bit of time and a little guidance, you can tackle digital decluttering with ease.
Start with a Clear Goal
Just like organizing your closet, digital decluttering works best with a clear goal in mind. Are you looking to free up storage space? Or perhaps you're aiming to improve your device's performance? Maybe you just want to make finding files less of a treasure hunt. Whatever your goal, keep it in focus as you declutter.
Tackle One Device at a Time
The same as when you tackle projects in your home, the best way to get overwhelmed is to do too much. Trying to declutter the kitchen, bathroom, and basement all at the same time may make you give up before you even start. Such as it goes with decluttering our devices, take one at time. Don't try to declutter your laptop, tablet, and smartphone all in one go. Start with one device, and once you've successfully tidied it up, move on to the next. This approach keeps the task manageable, keeps you from getting overwhelmed, and gives you a sense of accomplishment along the way. 😊
Cleanse Your Desktop

Dive into Your Downloads Folder
I think of the Downloads folder as the digital junk drawer. There are things in there that you need, but you can’t find them because they’re buried beneath all the proverbial mustard and ketchup packets. Dive in and start sorting. Create a temporary "To Sort" folder if you must, but don't let files linger there for too long. Delete what you don't need, and move important files to their rightful place.
Get Organized with Folders and Labels
Once you've pared down your digital clutter, it's time to give everything a home. Create folders and subfolders to categorize your files in a way that makes sense to you. Whether you organize by date, topic, or project, the goal is to make it easy to find what you need when you need it. And don't forget to add descriptive labels to your folders so you can quickly locate that elusive document or photo album.
Unsubscribe and Uninstall
Over time, we accumulate apps and subscriptions we no longer use. Take a moment to review your installed applications and digital subscriptions. If you haven't used an app in the past six months, it might be time to say goodbye. This not only frees up space but can also reduce digital distractions.
Tame Your Email Inbox
Emails can quickly get out of hand. Start by unsubscribing from newsletters you no longer read. Use folders or labels to organize important emails, and don't be afraid to use the delete button. An organized inbox can significantly reduce stress and increase productivity.
I have a friend who likes “white space” in her email, meaning that by the end of the day, she wants her inbox clean and clear. It helps her manage her stress. As soon as she gets an email, she decides what to do: delete, move, or respond. This approach helps her keep hundreds, if not thousands of emails clogging up her inbox.
Master Your Photos
As you can probably imagine, as an organizer, I have tons and tons of before-and-after photos, which take up an ENORMOUS amount of space. To help me keep my sanity, I use Google Photos to transfer the photos from my device to the cloud and employ the album feature to create a catalog of each of my projects.
Google will even suggest when a photo should be deleted because it’s too blurry or recommends what could be archived or even deleted after a period of time. There are plenty of tools out there, find one with features that suit your needs.
Schedule Regular Maintenance
Just like cleaning out your closet, digital decluttering is an ongoing process. Make it a habit to regularly review and tidy up your digital files. Set aside some time each month to delete old files, update folders, and ensure everything is still organized to your liking. By staying on top of your digital clutter, you'll prevent it from spiraling out of control in the future.
Celebrate Your Success
As with everything, when you make progress, celebrate! Take a moment to appreciate the cleaner, more organized digital space you've created. You worked hard, so acknowledge and reward it. Enjoy the improved performance of your devices and bask in the ease of finding files. You've earned it!
